Since their previous album La Folie was a roaring success in Europe, the Stranglers tried for a bigger hit with this noirish synth pop disc. It didn't work out that way, but "All Roads Lead to Rome" became a U.S. alt radio staple. The song, along with "Midnight Summer Dream" and other tracks, showed that singer Hugh Cornwell was punk's thoughtful elder statesman.
