Recorded on New Year's Eve/New Year's Day 1969-70 at New York's Filmore East, "Band Of Gypsies" found the revolutionary '60s guitar god throwing a rather soulful party with his new partners Buddy Miles on drums, and bassist and vocalist Billy Cox. The result was a somewhat new, funkier direction for Hendrix, one that, sadly, he never got the time to pursue fully. The sound quality remains somewhat muddy, but tracks like "Machine Gun" and "Message of Love" retain their force nonetheless. -- DAVID WILD (R
