Fascination Street (EP) © 1999 Elektra/Asylum Records Origina lly Released April 18, AMG EXPERT REVIEW: The lead singl e in America from Disintegration, "Fascination Street" is a compe lling example of the Cure at its considerable best. The single mi x shortens the album cut without reducing its roiling dark power, thanks to Gallup's impressive bass work and Smith's increasingly nervous, edgy delivery. As was then the common case with the Cur e, a band-created extended remix is also included; while not quit e as strong as the full album version, it's still pretty good, st arting with a haunting high synth line and slowly building into t he track's full energy. The two original B-sides are both fine nu mbers well suited to the overall Disintegration vibe, especially the quick, unsettling "Babble." Beginning with a collage of found sound noises before fully kicking into a brisk, keyboard-led gro ove, the song features one of Smith's strongest performances both lyrically and on guitar, rapidly becoming a fan favorite. Brzostek (New England, USA) The single fo r Cure's "Fascination Street" has two versions of the song: Remix (4:17) and Extended Remix (8:48). Both of these sound pretty muc h the same, but one is longer. We are also treated with two B-sid e tracks. "Babble" (4:16) is a speedy, chipper little tune. Overa ll, it is a simple song, but will be a treat for any Cure fan. "O ut of Mind" (3:51) has a slightly different sound to it than othe r songs from the "Disintegration" album era, but probably is good enough to have been included as part of the album. After a 1.5 m inute instrumental introduction, we have another chipper, fast-pa ce song with pretty simple repeating lyrics. The re-mixes of "Fas cination Street" are nice, but the two B-sides are what make this single worth getting. "Out of Mind" is a song that should be on the "Wish" album, whic h is why it may not have made it onto the more melancholy "Disint egration" CD. (Merc er Island, WA) I think it can generally be said remixes don't add much to their original cuts. Fascination Street is a glorious exception. Others might recommend this disk for the b-sides, but I just cant stop pressing repeat on track one. If you don't buy it now, you may lose out -- the other sites say it's out of print !
