Conditions and Grading
RECORDS : graded using Goldmine Vinyl Grading System
first grade = sleeve & second grade = record ps = picture sleeve
Mint (M) : still sealed or brand NEW records & sleeves.
Near Mint (NM) :
sleeve should look as close to perfect with only minor signs of wear and/or age. Minor impressions to the cover may be acceptable (due to the outer edge of the vinyl resting inside) however the artwork should be as close to perfect as can be.
record may have a very minor scuff but very little else can appear on the vinyl, obviously it had been handled with extreme care. It should play without any noise over the flaw.
Very Good+ (VG+) :
sleeve should be a virtually clean cover. The artwork should look clean with slightly more aging. Flat white paper will be somewhat yellow yet no stains or mildew from water damage. Some minor wear to the seams or spine, but no tears or holes popping through. The corners will be slightly dog eared yet no crackly bends defacing the artwork.
record will show wear, surface scuffs & light scratches. Surface scuffs are caused from blunt (not sharp) objects. The vinyl should still have a great luster, but the flaws will be noticeable to the naked eye.
Very Good (VG) :
sleeve will look worn & used. There may be some seam splitting (but not completely separated!). There will be some ringwear. It will look aged and more yellowish due to contaminants in the air (sometimes looking like cigarette smoke). Still it should be decent. VG should at least still have some attractive life to it and not have taped seams or water damage to it.
record should STILL play very good. There will almost always be some surface noise when they are played. The Dynamics should still be excellent, overpowering the surface noise.
Good (G) : few records will be listed if Good but may list if considered rare and/or of collectible interest :
sleeve graded G will look worn & used. There will be some ringwear. It will look aged and more yellowish due to contaminants in the air (sometimes looking like cigarette smoke). It will have seam splits (possibly taped and repaired, but only with scotch tape. No duct tape or masking tape repairs).
record will look very well played. It will have distracting surface noise, such as crackle that is continuous. It will also have some loss of dynamics caused from grooves being worn but should play without any skips or any obtrusively loud pops or repeated clicks caused by deep scratches. Good means that it will play with some form of decency, so one can still enjoy the music even though you can still hear noise caused from the wear.
CDs : first grade = inlay(s) & second grade = disc
Mint (M) :
CDs are factory sealed CDs and/or NEW CDs only.
Inlay(s) are all present and are all crisp, clean, with no flaws at all. No cut out marks on inlay(s) & jewel case.
Near Mint (NM) :
CDs graded Near Mint actually look Mint, however I will only grade factory sealed / brand new CDs Mint.
The disc has obviously been played very little or handled with care.
Inlay(s) graded Near Mint indicate all inlay(s) are present & look almost untouched.
Excellent (EX) :
CDs graded in EX condition look used, but look like they were taken good care of.
The disc will have a few very light scuffs / scratches these marks do Not affect play.
Inlay(s) graded EX will have only a few very minor flaws, such as a slight bend or light fingerprints or a hole punch/saw mark on insert.
Very Good+ (VG+) :
CDs graded VG+ will have some scuffs & scratches but the CD will continue to play well without any problems.
Inlay(s) graded VG+ will have some but Not all of the following: fingerprints, worn corners, smudges, creases, etc.
Very Good (VG) :
CDs graded VG look worn w/ numerous scuffs & scratches but the CD will continue to play without skipping.
Inlay(s) graded VG are heavily worn and may include heavy fingerprints, bent corners, smudges, creases, case dimple marks, and writing.
ZINEs :
MINT (M) : still sealed and NEW only. No visible flaws.
NEAR MINT (NM) : Zine actually looks Mint (Like New), however I will only grade sealed / brand new items Mint. Item has been handled & used very little or handled & stored with great care. Should look almost untouched.
EXCELLENT (EX) : Zine will have a few light visible signs of use but these should include only a few very minor flaws.
VERY GOOD+ (VG+) : Zine shows some signs of wear. It should have no pages missing and/or torn from zine, etc. It may have a cut corner and may have some of the following: worn corners, smudges, creases.
VERY GOOD (VG) : Zine looks worn w/ numerous folds, creases and shows heavy wear which may include bent corners, smudges, creases, and writing but no pages torn from zine.
GOOD (G) : Zine may still be acceptable but will show considerable wear w/ some or all of the following: numerous folds, creases, bent corners, smudges, creases, writing and pages missing and/or torn from zine.
Goldmine Grading Standard:
Mint [M]: Absolutely perfect in every way - certainly never played, possibly even still sealed. (More on still sealed below). Should be used sparingly as a grade, if at all.
------------------------------------------------------------
Near Mint [NM or M-]: A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record shows no obvious sign of wear. A 45 rpm sleeve has no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.
An LP jacket has no creases, folds, seam splits or any other noticeable similar defect. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same is true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves, and the like. Basically, Near Mint looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap.
------------------------------------------------------------
Very Good Plus [VG+]: Shows some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.
The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but is should be barely noticeable. The center hole is not misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turn-up corners, or a slight seam-split. An LP jacket my have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount.
In general, if not for a couple of minor things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus record highly acceptable.
------------------------------------------------------------
Very Good [VG]: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record are more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during the song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.
Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.
------------------------------------------------------------
Good [G], Good Plus [G+]: Good does not mean bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear.
A jacket or sleeve has seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object. If it's a common item, you'll probably find another copy in better shape eventually. Pass it up. But if it's something you have been seeking for years, and the price is right, get it.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Poor [P], Fair [F]: The record is cracked, badly warped, and won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and/or writing. The LP jacket barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully seam split, and written upon.
Except for impossibly rare records otherwise unattainable, records in this condition should be bought or sold for no more than a few cents each.
