VINYL GRADES
MINT (M)- A record that is untouched by human hands. No defects of any kind are present. I seldom give this grade out since even brand new records can have minor imperfections.
NEAR MINT (M-)- A seldom used record that shows little if any signs of use. Only a couple of very minor scratches can be acceptable under this grade, but most of the time a NEAR MINT record will be practically new looking. The label will be clean and cenetered, and the record won't have any spindle marks. Playback quality should be expected to be flawless.
EXCELLENT+ (EX+)- A record that shows only minor signs of use. The vinyl may contain only a few very minor spindle marks, surface scratches or imperfections. The label will be clean, cenetered and not peeling. A VG++ record is very close to NEAR MINT, and playback should be expected to be of outstanding quality.
EXCELLENT (EX)- A record that shows only minor to moderate signs of use, and never abuse. Minor scratches and scuffs may be evident, but should not effect play for the most part. The label will be mostly clean and centered, and may have minor writing. Playback on a EX record should be of excellent sound quality, with only minor noise primarily at the beginning of each side. Should be a very dpendable copy that will appear to have been used for a period of time. Comparable to a VG+ Goldmine grading.
VERY GOOD (VG)- A record that may show a moderate amount of surface scratches and imperfections from use. The label MAY be written on, dirty, faded or peeling, although it will be mentioned separately. A VG record will have some scratches that for the most part will not effect playback. Some minor noise, hissing or crackling may be evident, especially at the beginning of each side. Should be a dependable copy that may appear used, but for the most part will sound good. This is generally the lowest grade of record that is acceptable for DJ use.
GOOD (G)- A record that has been heavily used, and may show some signs of abuse. Minor and moderate scratches will be present on both sides. There is most likely groove wear and soiled vinyl. Playback will be of good quality for the most part, but it is likely that there will be noise in several spots. The label may be very dirty, written on, peeling or partially missing. This grade of vinyl is not recommended for club play or in situations where good sound quality is needed.
FAIR (F)- A record that has been heavily used, and shows several signs of abuse. Many scratches, some severe, can be seen without examination. A FAIR record will be intact, with no cracks in the vinyl. The label may be severely written on, peeling off, or missing. Noise will persist on most of the record and will detract from the listening experience.
POOR (P)- A record that has one or more of the following major defects; major warping, severe cuts and/or scratches, vinyl is cracked, vinyl is broken with parts missing, severe water damage (paper stuck in the record grooves), or heavily soiled and/or moldy. Records of this grade may have any or all of the defects mentioned in the above grades. Not recommended for playback on any record player. I try to avoid selling copies that are in POOR condition.
COVER GRADES
MINT (M) - A cover that is in perfect, like new condition. Usually sealed and there will be no notch, cut corner or hole punch.
NEAR MINT (M-)- A cover that shows only very minor wear and looks almost new. A cover that has no ring wear, and only very little corner and edge damage that will not detract from it's appearance.
EXCELLENT (EX)- A cover that has been used and handled, but never abused. The edges and corners may be slightly worn or rounded from being transferred to and from. Minor record ring wear may be present. This is a general grade that we use frequently, and it means that the cover is overall in excellent condition, but not perfect if examined closely. You may find EX covers that have various minor defects, and if a cover has a cut corner, notch or hole punch, it will be graded EX or worse.
VERY GOOD (VG)- A cover that has been frequently handled, but shows normal wear and tear. The edges and corners will show wear and may be rounded, white, and slightly split or soiled. The cover may have creases or minor writing. Ring wear will most likely be seen on the front and back. Overall, a cover that is still serviceable but appears to be heavily used.
GOOD- A cover that has been heavily used. Will show heavy wear on the edges and corners, may be creased, and may be split/splitting. Most likely this grade of cover will be dirty, written on, or have stickers/tape on it. Not recommended for protecting the vinyl anymore.
FAIR- A cover that shows heavy signs of wear, and is barely intact. Any or all forms of the following defects may be present; tape, writing, creases, corner wear, edge wear, soil, and water damage. The cover will have lost most of the original gloss, and the colors may be faded by the sun or aging. Not an acceptable grade of cover for protecting the vinyl in the long run.
POOR- A ruined cover-not intact and most likely in multiple pieces. Heavy wear. Not recommended at all.
IF a record's cover will no longer protect the vinyl, I will include a serviceable plain cover replacement when ordered. In some cases, the original cover is so bad that I throw it away, but most of the time I will include it with your order since I have no use for it anymore.
