Trip Hop Music

Trip hop music was born in the 1990s, in Bristol, England. Its Roots are in British electronica combined with the insurgence of American hip hop that was predominant at the time. Trip hop was characterized by dreamy, Down tuned breakbeats that deviated from soaring, atmospheric rhythms to dark, gloomy repetitions. The effect was a mellow, sonically infused Journey meant to evoke emotional and psychological ambience. Of all the hip hop and dance music offshoots, trip hop is arguably one of the most commercially successful - the full-length album-oriented releases routinely topped the indie charts in Britain and eventually the U.S.

Trip Hop Artists - The Beginning

While there is no conclusive beginning to the genre known as trip hop, it became widely popular with British DJs, who adapted the American hip hop standards into a mellower sound. Trip hop music became popular largely because of such prolific artists as Tricky, Portishead, and Massive Attack, whose first albums Blue Lines and Protection are often though of as definitive trip hop classics. Also influential were Portishead, who combined Samples of traditional rock music with trip hop's beats. Coupled with singer Beth Gibbons sultry vocals, Portishead created a unique form of trip hop. Another characteristic unique to the Bristol sound was the collaboration between artists: various members of Portishead, Massive Attack, and Tricky each appear on albums produced by the others. While the initial wave of Bristol-based trip hop bands proved to be commercially successful, the Next few generations of the genre proved to be equally so. Artists like Morcheeba, Glideascope, and Cibo Motto branched out into other styles and formed hybrid genres like ambient, breakbeat, acid jazz, and electronica. However, the original Bristol trip hop artists continue to maintain a strong following in the Club music scene.
