Your old buddy just dropped by and noticed that you are now listening to vinyl and is a little intrigued. He says "impress me", so what do you put on? I am thinking my Japan pressing of Steely Dan's Aja or maybe Love Over Gold by Dire Straits. Kinda unoriginal on my part I guess as those are two that are very much used by a lot of people I imagine. Sometimes I use Diane Schuur and Count Basie or the Telarc 1812. So what do you impress with?

Ken,

Interesting to me that you mentioned Steely Dan. Back in the '80s, my "test" record was Gaucho. There was just something about the Steel Dan production that settled with my ears.

That's easy...Metal Box by Public Image Ltd.

And you want Metal Box versus Second Edition since Metal Box plays at 45RPM and Second Edition at 33 1/3 RPM for the ultimate sonic experience.

Test with "Albatross" and "Poptones"

However, be careful not to let Jah Wobble blow your monitors out.

Got a lucky find nearly a year ago when I found a near perfect condition record of "The Who live at Leeds" on the polydor label. Been dreaming about owning this since I last hear it in 1971. It sounds brilliant in vinyl form. The recording is basic, primitive and probably as near as one can hope to get to hearing the Who live. Find a copy and wrack-up the volumn for all your neighbours to enjoy!
