Hi folks,

I have only just begun collecting records. I had a limited budget so I bought myself a Pioneer PL990 turntable. I am actually really pleased with how it sounds. For now it suits my budget and my requirements.

I am wondering if replacing the generic Stylus that came on the player with a diamond stylus will improve the sound quality by any decent margin. If not, that`s fine, but if buying a new stylus would improve the sound then that would be great.

I look forward to hearing advice from more experienced people.

Many thanks

Mark.

Yes Mark. It will improve the sound of your turntable by a long shot! In the land of audio, the general rule is, the more you pay, usually the better you get. However, you needn't spend that much though to get decent sound. My suggestion to you is, that if you want a definite upgrade on your turntable, then might I suggest the Ortophon 2m Red cartridge. It is a definite step up for the beginner audiophiles, and costs under $80.00.

Others may have some suggestions in here, but I have tried many others, and for the best sound, and the best bang for your buck, the Ortophon 2M Red cannot be beat for my ears! Unfortunately, if you want even better sound than that, you can definitely expect to pay way over $100.00! The best thing to do though is to deal with a place that will allow you to try out extra cartridges, along with a satisfactory return policy, so that you may be able to try out other cartridges by just paying the difference, and if you are not satisfied, you can get a full refund altogether. Remember too Mark, not every cartridge is going to sound alike, according to everyone else ears, so what may sound good to me, may not be to you, due to the fact that there may be certain sounds & things you are looking for in the cartridge you want to purchase.

Here is the online place I go to purchase cartridges, and they can also steer you in the right direction. Here is the link for the Needle Doctor: http://in.search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oGkmg.YDVP70UAT9LuPXRG;_ylu=X3oDMTByZWgwN285BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkAw--/SIG=11gfaiibr/EXP=1328926910/**http%3a//www.needledoctor.com/

Also, the Needle Doctor can be contacted toll free: 1-800-229-0644.

In the final analysis.......

You would always of course do much better to replace a stock cartridge on your turntable. It is no different than using shitty sounding stock speakers in your car! It is like night & day, and yes you will most certainly notice the difference.

I hope this helps Mark & good luck to you.........
