Anyone know of a website that shows an excellent list of new releases across all/most genres including indie labels? I find some decent sites, but none of there are far too many holes in their lists.
Rate Your Music.com(RYM) is good. How to use RYM, you might ask? When you are in the site on the home page, just click on the blue box to your left of the page where it says: "charts", then when you are inside where you see the "custom chart". At the top where you see: "top albums", you can either set it by the decade, or individual year for all of the top Indie music from those time frames, then set your research preferences where you see: "only include genre's", and right next to that box, type in Indie as your genre preference. Now, in the final setting of your search, you can either set it to where you only want top charts for a specific country, or you can leave it blank and have it to where you just get an overall view of no specific country. The cool thing is that these RYM charts are actually rated by fans from everywhere in the world, so you are probably going to get more of an accurate overall view as to what some of the best bands are.
Now, one final site I like to use to keep up weekly on the current Indie scene is this site called Indie Rock Cafe'.com. A very useful site, it may be subjective in terms of what is or isn't good, but still, regardless it still covers a much more broader spectrum, being that sites like Pitchfork straddle both sides of the commercial mainstream, and the indie underground. What is even cooler about Indie Rock Cafe' is that it has a very good panel of people that know Indie well and keep up on the latest bands that are coming out by the week, and they go through approximately 2,000 bands a week so you don't have to. That is pretty much their motto.....
If this is not enough Indie for you and you want even more, as we all know music lovers everywhere can NEVER get enough music, both RYM and Indie Rock Cafe provide you information of what record label a certain band is on, and most of the time record labels will have other bands of interest you perhaps may have overlooked, and also have websites too. In other words, just by cross referencing the actual record label that a band is on, you can find more than a good wealth of bands out there on a particular label that one of your favorite bands is already on! All of these sources have always been very helpful sources to me when seeking out non-commercial music I like, and has always helped me to avoid modern mainstream radio which is dying a slow surefire death. Trust me, just with these sources alone, you will be more than entertained, but the music is also infinite too and you will never reach the end, so have fun........
As a side note: When I visited RYM the first time, it took me a couple of weeks just for me to go through the top Indie Rock charts from the 90's-00's, as there was hundreds, if not a couple of thousand perhaps, but keep in mind, it also depends on country or region you are searching in. Sometimes there is less and sometimes there may be more...........
Regardless.............
I hope this helps, and happy hunting!
