We all know that "Music for airports" is a well known factor by now (hi there Mr.Eno..:)). But what about "music to go shopping by"? This peculiar instrumental mellow type of music, usually played on an electrical piano, that we all know and cherish.
The other day, when I was doing my shopping at the local dept.-store, it suddenly dawn´d on me, that this must be a pretty big thing, since I know for a fact that it´s a global phenomenon.
There are thousands and thousands of dept.-store Dj´s out there, really digging this, which again means, that there must be millions of these recordings-.........!? The scene must be HUGE. Why haven´t I heard of any of these stars ? Is it a secret cult-thing, with secret top 100 listings, radio stations, clubs etc.? And you record-storeowners, where do you keep this music ? Is it an "under the counter"-thing ?
Music to go shopping by... much of it is the dregs of the easy listening brigade, probably easiest found in the bargain bins of almost any kind of shop, pan pipes, somebody playing the hits of the Shadows on his hammond organ, all your favourite songs slaughtered to lull you into spending money without you realising.
Those who are in the click of this kind of music, look for the major names, lots of it has that kitch boogaloo organ funk sounds, often found on library discs and after much searching can be an odd track of gold on an otherwise worthless piece of vinyl.
So for the store played stuff... bargain bins... otherwise for the true funky stuff, your best to ask... many store owners overlook this vinyl gold, those who have caught on to it, will have sections, usually set aside for the DJs, but with prices to match.
Yes I´m looking for a particular well felt and expressed edition of Tom Jones´"whats up pussycat", played solo and instrumental on an electrical piano, but I think you´re right. I better go straight to the source and ask at the info.desk (they´re very kind, I shopalot at their store so they know me), because as i wrote earlier, I´m a complete novice when it comes to who's who and whats hot in this field of music, so I really have´nt got much else to go on. All I know is that the tune that caught my ears the other day (just as I was loosing "mammy Blue"). made me spent the rest of the day in the most wonderful fuzzy/soft mood, with gentle images of sweet loving kittys ,happily munching away on Kitty-o´s
It was really nice.
By the way, this DJ´s a real pro-....., there was a sale on in the cats & dogs section......pro for sure.
Thanks for trying to help me out, but I think my best shot would be to go ask at the store. Who knows, they might even hook me up with the DJ himself.
