Anyone a fan? I've just rediscovered my LP of "Acadie" having not listened to it for a while. I got it because I noticed his name on my copy of Eno's "Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks" and then came across the record and remembered it. I like this serendipitous way of discovering music.
I've got it on now to help me through my drafting and am more pleased than ever with the overall sound of the album. It has a satisfactory roundedness to it, I find, while giving a sense of great space which the semi-cryptic lyrics add to. I just looked him up on the Infobahn and it turns out he's rather more famous than I thought, so I thought there must be some here who have a like or great knowledge about him!
This album is a Stereophile magazine pick in the "records to die for" category. I agree with their estimation.
If you connect to Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and Ray Lamontagne, you would probably "get" Dan's music.
Emmylou backs a few things on this.
The subtle parts are the reflections of his French Canadian heritage, although raised in Ontario, Canada.
Interesting parallel is the Louisiana influence with Aaron Neville backing here also.
Like Ray Lamontagne's very early work, this is a very personal statement.
I believe all the great people Daniel has worked with since then wanted to in some measure as a result of listening to this piece.
i recently bought a Jsp box set of early Cajun recordings.
Blues, zydeco and raunchy rock are more to my taste than sensitivity and subtlety.
i can appreciate that its good (great)
but bring on the fiddles and accordions.
