Hi, Brian is always mentioning that the Asian/Japanese reissues of the Metallica albums from the 80's sound the best. I have tried the Mobile fidelity vinyl reissues, and the Rhino/Warner reissues to NO success, as those vinyl reissues sound like shit. Now, you have mentioned before that, apparently the Japanese vinyl reissues most likely sound the best.
So, my question to Brian, and whomever else this may concern is.........
Are there any other vinyl reissues besides the Japanese pressings that have a superior sound, or are the Japanese reissues the most superior sounding pressings that can be purchased of the Metallica 1980's recordings? Also, Brian, where can the Japanese issues be purchased? Do you have a link?
Thanks..........

Hi VJ...
Well that Question raises much thought..
what i can say is as far as the reissues the original metallica pressings
on vynil are good.. there are some reissues on picture discs which are probably
good..
japaneese vynils are not re-issues those were pressed at the original relese
time..i know this because i have someone going to japan a couple times a year..
and metal is in high demand in europe bands like kiss, metallica, maiden are all
very popular..i know for a fact pink floyd, and metallica are hard to get pressings..
my guy has them but they go for about 100 bucks.. i know the master of puppets is on
ebay now..and its about 100.. my guy has kill em all japaneese and im seriously considering
it..as i paid 30 bucks for that shit remaster its so bad that i cant bear to even
play it anymore..
thus said it will cost..other japaneese are more easy to find i just got
4 springsteens,1 maiden,2 stones that my guy picked up for me for 30 bucks a piece..
you can check ebay also ive purchased many at very descent prices.. i bought a lot
of beatles and stones for about half the price id pay at a import store..
just have to wait about 2 weeks for delivery..but the pressings are usually in excellent
condition..youll find out after a while which sellars are more reliable ..when they say
near mint..thats what you get..
as far as other good pressings of any music, uk,germany are always very nice sounding..
locally best are those rhino reissues i just got the doors absolutley live and it was
only 22.00 canadian for a 180 2lp press and it sounds oooooh sooooo good...
the others are back to basics i think there called and i did see repres of
neil young harvest, motley crue theatre of pain, def leppard pyromania..at a very nice
price of 15.00 bucks..
i bought lots of sabbath they are all very good sounding and i can tell you
the heavan and hell lp is really awsome and it was also 15.00
so to sum it up go japanesse but dont kill your wallet..look around ebay some dealers
put 100 bucks ..but shopping around.. i had luck ,i got pink floyd meddle for 30 bucks all in..
you can get the cheap 180 gram releases which are really worth it..
i would like to mention also that picture discs are usually having surface noise
but the music on them is usually very nice.. ozzy put out blizzard of ozz and
diary of a madman and those pic discs sound awesome and they were only 25.00 which
is always nice to collect ..
also id like to point out if your looking for a certin title, google
it on the net and investigate theres always info about sound quality
and people that own it already youll get an idea if its worth the investment.
so thats about it any questions feel free..

Well Brian, I am trying to avoid picking up the 180 gram releases because, like the Mobile Fidelity ones, they also I think sound like shit too as well. So, unfortunately, much to my chagrin, I may end up just having to save my monies on those and just purchase the original U.S. releases, and if I am lucky, I might even be able to get for cheap on an Ebay auction. Forget the Japanese reissues, they cost too much for my pocket, especially in this suck ass economy. I am not saying the U.S. originals would be any cheaper, but at least I have more of a chance winning them for a much better price on an Ebay auction than just trying to purchase them outright per-se.

Hi Vj..
well my Test is Completed..
kill em all (megaforce cd) is really good finally descent sound
the master of puppets and ride the lightning gold dcc remasters are also
quite good especially the nice sound on fade to black..
while these are not vynils Vj for your buck you can probably find them
for 5-10 bucks at a used cd joint..
or ive seen the original canadian vynils for 10 bucks a piece..
like i said if you want to get a uk or japaneese press and not be
soaked in the wallet..shop around sometimes ebay sellars in japan dont
charge that much..i paid only 20 bucks for the stones high tide and green grass
in mint shape with obi and a 1999 tour book thats all in shipping and taxes..20 dollars..
but maybe i was just lucky..just the lp here is 40 - 50 dollars.

I am not really interested in the cd's Brian, and I will forget about the Japanese pressings for now. I think I will look into the Canadian pressings, although they seem to be a little more scarce here in the U.S.
The original domestic U.S. releases might be my best bet, although those are becoming quite scarce too as well. The best thing could very well be to just look out for an auction, but I had better act swiftly before the value on the original U.S. releases goes up any higher. Classic 80's Metallica on vinyl seems to be hot ticket items these days. I think it will might be on You Tube for the time, so perhaps I will listen on there to see how it sounds, even if it is nowhere near close to the way the actual vinyl recording would sound.
I think the vinyl reissues from the 2000's are garbage, and the cd's that I have heard are thinner sounding, which would be a waste of money.
In the end, I think I would just be better off purchasing near mint copies of originals, and transferring them on cd. At least I would get as close as possible to the original recorded source as it was originally intended to be heard when it came out.
Thanks anyway Brian........

I had the newer master of puppets reissue, and it just sounded godawful, I mean REALLY bad. Weird this is that it apparently was done properly. Mastered from the original analog masters at half speed, and all that. I was sorely disappointed.
