The Killers Are Back With The Long Awaited Day & Age

The Killers Are Back With The Long Awaited Day & Age
The Killers are back with the recently released album Day & Age, their third studio album since emerging on the scene with 2004’s Hot Fuss. I was back in college when the band first made a name for themselves. I remember hearing a style of music that didn’t sound like anything I’d ever heard before. Shortly after, it became all I could hear as the airwaves became flooded with cheaper poor man’s Killers such as The Bravery.

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who noticed. The Killers have had a long-standing rivalry with The Bravery and other knockoff bands for riding their coattails immediately after the band and their style of music became successful.

Although most people mark Hot Fuss as the beginning of the group’s musical career, die-hard fans will tell you that the foursome from Las Vegas got together in 2001 when lead singer Brandon Flowers declined to move to Los Angeles with his former band Blush Response.

Honestly Flowers, what were you thinking? Since making the biggest boneheaded decision of your life, you’ve only met David Keuning (guitar/vocals) and formed one of the most recognizable American rock bands in history… Wait, scratch that first part.

Shortly after the discoveries of Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums) and Mark Stoermer (bass), The Killers were born and emerged on the scene with one of the most successful debut albums of all time, Hot Fuss.

The album was hit after hit. One of those rare gems that you could slide into the CD player of your car and leave it in for months on purpose and not because your car’s CD player tends to eat discs (damn Cutlass Supreme).

Hot Fuss would be followed by 2006’s Sam’s Town, another successful release, which contained the hit single and Guitar Hero track “When You Were Young.”

Day & Age is supposedly a continuation of Sam’s Town, according to Flowers. The first single from the album, “Human”, was released to radio and available for download in late September. Fans got an even better taste when the group performed “Human” and “Spaceman” during Saturday Night Live on October 4, 2008.

In a stunning move similar to Radiohead’s 2008 release of In Rainbows, Day & Age was first released as a vinyl, which would allow the buyer to download the entire album for free. I recently had a chance to listen to a few tracks and, based on the out of context material I heard, I can say that it more than lives up to the hype.

The band has grown up, but not old as the album has a playful tone from start to finish. When you take into account the group’s early success and factor in their work ethic and willingness to try new things, it’s hard to imagine that Day & Age will be anything but an instant classic. Based on the success the album has already seen in the limited markets its had exposure in, I’d say it’s a fair bet. By the way, what ever happened to Blush Response?
