Rihanna Music for the Broken-Hearted

I was with a group of girl friends last night enjoying a karaoke party when one of them sang a Rihanna song with so much emotion and emphasis on every word of the lyrics that I and the rest of the girls exchanged curious glances as to the reason behind our friend’s choice of song and her unexpected display of sentiments through her performance.
The song was “Take a Bow” by Rihanna and its lyrics were basically a sarcastic message given by a woman who no longer wanted to believe and accept the apologies and lies of a man who had obviously wronged her many times in the past.
The words of “Take a Bow” reeks of how much the woman no longer wants anything to do with the man, and it even verges on the point of hating the man for everything he has done to her and all the lies and hurts he has been inflicting on her for so long.
In the song, Rihanna starts with the sarcastic call for an applause and even a standing ovation. She goes on by saying “You look so dumb right now standing outside my house, trying to apologize. You’re so ugly when you cry. Please, just cut it out. Don’t tell me you’re sorry ‘cause you’re not. Baby, when I know you’re only sorry you got caught.”
The song’s title is derived from the chorus where Rihanna sings that her man “put on quite a show” and really had her going but that the curtain is already closing because the show is over, thus she sarcastically tells her man to take a bow. Her sarcasm is best captured in the line “That was quite a show, very entertaining. But it’s over now. Go on and take a bow.”
Such was the extent of the song’s angst that I and the rest of the girls couldn’t help but wonder why our friend was singing it with so much passion. We would’ve enjoyed our friend’s performance (because her rendition of the song was quite stunning, if I may say) had we not been distracted by the confusion and curiosity breeding among the glances we were circulating amongst ourselves.
We all knew about our friend’s boyfriend of more than two years, but none of us heard of any news as to the real status of their relationship. Based on our questioning glances, we were all wondering whether or not our friend’s relationship with her boyfriend was really on the rocks or, worse, had come to a close, as she was fervently singing about in her chosen karaoke piece.
During dinner, after our karaoke session, one of the girls was brave enough to casually inquire about our friend’s “amazing” performance of Rihanna’s “Take a Bow.” True enough, and surprisingly so, our friend confirmed that she had broken up with her boyfriend recently and that “Take a Bow” had been her personal anthem. She even admitted to having that one song on continuous loop and playing full blast in her iPod, her car CD player and her home component for the entire first three days preceding the breakup.
No wonder she knew the song by heart and could sing it with so much intensity! Every beat and every word of it must have been part of her system already. But kidding aside, we were all sad for her for how her recent relationship ended, but we were also somehow happy that she seemed to have moved on. She was able to sing about it and share the story with her friends. It’s a good sign that she’s on the right track.
After I heard my friend’s story, I started to appreciate Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” even more. It’s amazing how her song could actually communicate and relate so directly with other women’s relationship dilemmas and heartbreaks.
