Music Records I Remember from Prom Night

To many people, prom night can be one of the most memorable nights in their entire lives – either for the best, most romantic of reasons or for the worst and most traumatizing. Mine wasn’t too shabby. I didn’t get drunk, I didn’t win the Early Bird Award and I didn’t win the terrifying title of Prom Queen. I didn’t break my high heels. What made the experience unforgettable, though, was the playlist. Being a huge music fan, I can still recall to this day some of the music records which the DJ played at prom night.
Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper: This is a timeless pop song from the second Cyndi Lauper album, She’s So Unusual. It was released officially in 1984 as a vinyl record by Epic Records and stayed for two weeks at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The lyrics can be viewed as something which relates to the sentiments and emotions of many senior high school students about to start a new chapter in their lives – “if you're lost you can look, and you will find me time after time” – but it’s for something else that I’ll remember this Cyndi Lauper record as a prom classic. Time After Time was played in the dance scenes of one of my favorite high school-themed films, the comedy Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion.
Take My Breath Away by Berlin. Duh. This probably takes the tiara for the sappiest, cheesiest, most overplayed slow dance song in prom nights. The hairstyles of Berlin are also befitting of the funny horror that high school flashbacks usually induce. Released as a 7” single/ 12” single by Columbia, this love song appeared in the Top Gun soundtrack album and won the 1987 Golden Globe and Academy Awards for Best Original Song.
Forever Young by Rod Stewart. This song was originally written by the inimitable Bob Dylan, but let’s face it: Rod Stewart made it his own and took “Forever Young” to prom playlist level. A significant hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and mainstream rock charts, this song is like “Time After Time” in that its lyrics provide a beautiful send-off message: “May you never love in vain, and in my heart you will remain – forever young.”
Something About The Way You Look Tonight by Elton John. No, not the Rod Stewart record of (almost) the same title. This is a different one, and it is perhaps my favorite Elton John record of all time, what with its orchestraic piano arrangements and heartfelt lyrics. It was released in the spring-summer of 1997 as the first single from the Elton John album, The Big Picture, and then later as a double A-side single to the Princess Diana tribute, Candle in the Wind 1997. Not only did the song become the best-selling single ever in the history of the United Kingdom; “Something About The Way You Look Tonight” is also a romantic rock song on piano for prom night couples on the dance floor.
