Not Tryin To Knock The Recent Work Of Lifehouse, But Their Early Work Is Still The Best
I have to say that I pretty much like all kinds of music. My iPod is pretty embarrassing when I really stop and think about it, with everything on it from The Dixie Chicks to GWAR. To this day, if I’m having an argument with my younger brother or goofing on him for whatever reason, he’ll still point out the fact that my mp3 player has Enrique Iglesias on it.

My extreme taste in music is only limited by my dislike of two popular genres; country music and Christian rock. For whatever reason, I could never seem to get into either, even when the country music craze was at its all time highest back in the early 90s. I remember being 10 years old, listening to “Achy Breaky Heart” and thinking, “I could have written this”. My hatred only grew deeper when the dance came along.

As for Christian rock, I just can’t seem to get past the message. I think that many of the bands I’ve heard are talented, but for some reason, I just can’t get on board. It’s like that guy who comes up to you and says, “I’d like to talk to you about Jesus”. Yeah, I’d like you not to…

You can imagine my cynicism in 2000 when I first heard about the band Lifehouse. At that point, the band had been around since 1999 when they were a Christian rock band called Blyss. Sounds kinda douchy huh?

One day during my freshman year of college, a friend of mine had downloaded most of their 2000 album No Name Face onto my computer without telling me. When I came home from class that day, I saw that she had left me a note telling me to at least give them a try. She also made sure to rip on me for the not 1 but 2 Enrique Iglesias songs in my music folder.

I really wanted to hate Lifehouse, but for whatever reason I liked what I heard. Lead vocalist Jason Wade has an amazing voice and is obviously sincere with the lyrics he sings. “Hanging By a Moment” would go on to become the band’s first commercial success, a song written by Wade that was labeled the “Most Played Song of 2001”. Having lived through 2001, I kind of have to agree with this. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing it. People were shaving the words in the back of their heads.

No Name Face would also make the band famous with other hit singles such as “Sick Cycle Carousel” and “Breathing”, with the latter being more commercially successful. The single “Everything” would also go onto fame by being used in the pilot episode of the hit TV show Smallville. This began the long-standing relationship between the band and the show. Lifehouse would go on to have seven songs played during the first four seasons of the series, ending with a live performance in a fourth-season episode.

Lifehouse would go on to have success with later albums, but many fans still agree that No Name Face is and always will be their best work. Now if I can only find a way to hide my iPod before people see my Winger collection.
