Have You Listened To The Dave Matthews Band Since College?

Have You Listened To The Dave Matthews Band Since College?
The album Under The Table And Dreaming is just one of those CDs that everyone seems to own, regardless of whether or not they actually remember buying it. It’s probably sitting in your collection right now. Did you buy it from a used record store? Did you pick it up at Best Buy when you were in high school? Maybe you burned a copy off your best friend Mike in college.

The truth is, most people don’t remember where or how they got Under The Table And Dreaming. All they know is that they have it now and occasionally listen to it to remember a simpler time when the Dave Matthews Band was writing quality music instead of selling out.

I listened to this album for the first time in a while the other day and, as much as I dislike the band now, the music was just as good as the first time I heard it way back in the day. The thing that makes Under The Table And Dreaming truly superb is the fact that it’s hit after hit after hit. One of those rare albums that can be listened to from start to finish without having to skip a track.

The band followed up this highly successful CD with a few more notable albums, but it seemed that as time went on, the group became less and less relevant to their original fan base, which seems to be a re-occurring problem for the Dave Matthews Band, if of course you want to refer to it as a problem. The group’s fan base seems to outgrow them like a generational thing.

Many of the hardcore fans of the band that I knew in my late high school/early college years were just that. Late high school and early college students, usually female. So far, my theory seems to be correct. If I ever happen to catch a clip from a live show of theirs on VH1, I usually see about 90% of this demographic in attendance.

Could there be more to this? Perhaps it’s some kind of cult that goes around recruiting pre-freshman girls all across America to distribute copies of Under The Table And Dreaming in your home when you’re not looking. Maybe I’ve said too much.

Why do most fans outgrow the band’s music? Maybe it’s just that time in life that all college students go through where they participate in traditional activities without really even knowing why. I never really liked frisbee golf, but I played it anyway because it was something you were supposed to do at college.

Maybe then, a large portion of Dave Matthews fans never really cared for his music, but listened anyway because it was something you were supposed to do at college. Whatever the reason, you can’t doubt the fact that Under The Table And Dreaming is anything but a classic. It’s just a shame that it has to be associated with the aforementioned fans that refer to it as “Dave” just like the obnoxious Pink Floyd fans that refer to their music as “Floyd”. Grow up people!

Too funny. "The truth is, most people don’t remember where or how they got Under The Table And Dreaming"

I fall under that category ... no idea how UtTaD got into my collection, but it did!

"As much as I dislike the band now". What are you talking about, DMB is still
awesome. They have only gotten better. Im a college male student-athlete and
will always love DMB. The true fans you are talking about, really are not fans if
they stop liking them and only listen to them because they think they have to.

I'm 18, female and I love the band.... I'm trying to "burn out" on them as my
boyfriend calls it, by listening to them all the time. I honestly never get tired
of them. He hates them... So anyway I was never recruited. I guess I'll right
back after college, who know maybe your right! Maybe it's just a stage in my
life.
