Fans Await CKY's Forth Album
by Nick Law - January 12, 2009
Fans of the Jackass franchise and anything that has involved Bam Margera since will be able to tell you more than you want to know about CKY. But the group from West Chester, Pennsylvania that features Margera’s older brother Jess on the drums had been around long before Steve-O snorted his first goldfish. They have been through some different members, but the band’s core has remained in tact ever since its formation in 1998 and with their long awaited forth album due out in March of 2009, it looks like CKY or Camp Kill Yourself might finally steal the spotlight from the prank filled videos that bear the same name.
The band’s beginnings stem from a group called Foreign Objects that was formed in 1994 by longtime friends Jess Margera and Deron Miller. It didn’t take long for both to realize that the name wasn’t working and shortly after meeting Ryan Bruni through their jobs at UPS, the name of the band was changed to CKY. Deron and Jess began to record the band’s first album, the properly titled Volume 1, at the same time that Jess Margera’s younger brother Bam was working on his first full-length prank video called “Landspeed: cKy”. The band’s music was used exclusively as the soundtrack for the video, with information on how to get more CKY recordings being shown during the credits.
Due to the enormous cult success of “Landspeed: cKy” and all of the subsequent films by Bam Margera, the band was able to quickly develop a following and embarked on the 1999 Warped Tour. It was during this tour that bassist Ryan Bruni decided to leave the group and newcomer Chad Ginsburg would have to step in and play bass until the appropriate replacement could be found.
In September 2002, after being delayed by their new label Island, CKY released Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild, an alternative rock lovers dream consisting of 9 solid hard rock tracks and 1 soft acoustic ballad to wrap the album up. IDR was a definite improvement on the band’s part since CKY Volumes 1 & 2 and showed a lot of maturity in a group that really hadn’t been together all that long. To support the album, the band embarked on a number of tours, including a tour with Guns N Roses and a one-off show opening for Metallica.
During the recording of the band’s third album, An Answer Can Be Found, the group got smaller by one when bassist Vern Zaborowski decided to leave the band. CKY would then go on to enlist the services of Matt Deis, formerly a bass player for the band All That Remains. Before they could do this, however, An Answer Can Be Found would have to be recorded with both Ginsburg and Miller filling in on bass.
An Answer Can Be Found was released on June 28, 2005 and although it debuted at #35 on the Billboard 200 chart, the album was overshadowed by front man Miller having an onstage meltdown and walking off during a June 24th concert in Burlington, Vermont. Miller cited drug and alcohol problems as the reason for his outburst on the official CKY Alliance website, but fans have been waiting loyally ever since for the group’s long awaited forth album, which has been scheduled for release sometime in March. Will the band continue to evolve, or were Miller’s actions be the beginning of the end? Only time will tell…
