Do You Own Back in Black? The Answer is Yes. Yes You Do.

Do You Own Back in Black? The Answer is Yes. Yes You Do.
There are some albums that everyone just seems to own, regardless of whether or not they remember actually buying them. There are several albums that fall under this category, but my three personal favorites are Under the Table and Dreaming by the Dave Matthews Band, Songs You Know By Heart by Jimmy Buffett and Back in Black by AC/DC. Sure, you may have bought these albums under you own free will, but the more logical explanation is that they just appeared in your collection out of thin air. Go check, I bet they’re there right now.

Back in Black is the 7th studio album by Australian rock band AC/DC and without a doubt their most well known release coming in at second among the top-selling albums of all time, behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Just listen and it’s easy to see why Back in Black was such an immediate success. Just about every track is a classic, making this one of those CDs that you can just push play and listen to without having to skip every other track.

Considering that Back in Black features some of AC/DC’s best known music, it’s interesting to think that the band had considering breaking up prior to its recording. Back in Black was the first album recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who had died at the age of 33 in 1980. The band decided to carry on and hired lead singer Brian Johnson, who would ultimately give the band the signature scream that they’re know by today.

According to Angus Young, the album’s all-black cover was a “sign of mourning” for Scott, but with tracks like “Hells Bells,” “You Shook Me All Night Long” and the title track “Back in Black,” it’s impossible to listen to this album and feel depressed. Instead, you get the impression that this was the defining moment that established this group as the rock and roll juggernaut that we know today.

AC/DC has continued to stay in the spotlight over the years due to their ability to write and perform some of the best music ever. The band recently made their video game debut with the Rock Band franchise featuring “Let There Be Rock” as a playable track. It has been confirmed that the setlist from their Live at Donington album will also be released as playable songs by means of a retail disc titled AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack.

The band continues to put on one of the greatest shows in rock and roll today and, although their current music doesn’t hold a candle to the classics, it should be admirable that they continue to write in an age where many groups don’t.

The next time you’re looking for a solid album that doesn’t let up from the first toll of the bell until the best line in any song every written (rock and roll is just, rock and roll), look in your album collection for Back in Black. Trust me, it’s in there.

Dammit!! I thought I had you! Checked my 2000 LP records, nope. Checked my 1000+ CDs... nope. Checked my Box Sets... uhmm... "Bonfire AC/DC"? A Xmas gift from an old housemate who *noticed* I had *no* AC/DC? Yep... it's in there! DAMN!

It's just a shame that Bon Scott died before recording this album, as everything the band recorded with him surpasses everything they recorded with his sucessor.
No disrespect to Brian Johnson meant at all, he's a fine singer, but the Scott era AC/DC is just perfect to me.
Ride On Bon!
