On its first major-label release, Massachusetts trio Wheat demonstrate that it's possible to be a quirky indie-rock band even after you've stopped being an indie-rock band. Their third album, Per Second, uses off-kilter beats, found sounds and the kind of fuzzy Space Age vibe that producer Dave Fridmann has also brought to the Flaming Lips' records. But Wheat now reside on the fringes of adult-contemporary pop, writing lilting, rootsy pop tunes, such as "Life Still Applies," that deserve to bump Matchbox Twenty and the Goo Goo Dolls off radio playlists. the Replacements-y "These Are Things" and the deceptively upbeat "I Met a Girl." The latter bops along on a strummy acoustic guitar part and a sea of "ooh-oohs," with Scott Levesque's rich vocals slightly outpaced by the herky-jerky bass line. It's a disorienting effect that never detracts from how wonderfully, painfully catchy a song this is.
