    Three years after Stroke 9's wry, infectious "Little Black Backpack" single stormed alternative radio and made Nasty Little Thoughts a gold debut, the band reappears with an album of upbeat hookery. Frontman Luke Esterkyn has a knack for lyrical phrasing and melody. On "Kick Some Ass," Esterkyn mocks the bruising sentiment of nu-metal: "Anger's today's fashion/So sing another song about bashing someone's head in." On "We Were Wrong," he gets brutally honest: "For me you were wrong/I only came over to get it on." Their work with various producers -- Jerry Harrison, David Kahne and former Marvelous 3 frontman Butch Walker -- gives the record a dynamic absent from most commercial rock albums

these days. Of these twelve songs, the only real slip up is the humorless "Anywhere." But that aside, Rip It Off really rips.
