 Rosey Dirty Child
| |
Initially, urban rock chick Rosey comes across as a Fiona Apple soundalike on Prozac or an MTV2-ready Pink on her genre-splicing debut, Dirty Child. Beneath the surface comparisons, however, lurks a vibrant new artist bursting with individuality. Credit Macy Gray producer Darryl Swann with helping the colorful Rosey meld her eclectic musical influences into a catchy, uplifting sound -- from the orchestral, hip-hop-tinged "Love" (originally heard on the Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack), to the funky, bass-driven "Like a Dream," to the bluesy closing track, "My Baby." The former DJ and A&R exec shines even brighter on the sweeping, string-driven ballad "Beautiful," where her smoky vocals Read More take flight as she longs "to be beautiful in somebody's eyes," and on the esteem-boosting "Desperate," where she puts a co-dependent love affair in perspective. With this Boho chic, grrrl power collection under her midriff, it looks like everything's coming up Rosey for this Dirty Child. TRACY E. HOPKINS (June 25, 2002)
