    Red Snapper's claim to modest fame in Britain's overstuffed dance scene is the trio's ability to play real instruments in a self-described "fuck-off jazz" style. Calling this stuff "jazz" of any kind is a stretch, though. Sure, there are plenty of woodsy upright bass tones and real-time trap-kit beats, but there's little in the way of improvisation or even call-and-response interplay. What the Snappers do best is lock into hypnotic, down-tempo grooves that work like hip-hop break beats, with misty horn and guitar textures gliding over the top. So it's best to focus on the details: the reverberating Stone Roses-like snare that lends a trippy, post-Madchester feel to "Spitalfields"; the aggressive bass that gouges "Seeing Red." And then there's "4 Dead Monks," an instance in which the Snappers actually develop a tune, in this case taking a stroll through an increasingly disturbing netherworld, before slinking back to the lounge.
