    The third platter from Get Up Kids frontman Matt Pryor's mid-tempo outlet bears the distinct sound of an indie vet in reflection. With a heavy heart, he sprinkles in couplets for past lovers and corner bars over cotton-soft rock tracks that breathe and shimmer. However somber and cloudy, Worse for the Wear fits like an old shirt the first time on. It's a loose and basic soft alt-rock record where bitterness rides a piano hook ("Hover Near Fame") and a warm bed of organ hums for the lonely ("Hanging on Our Hope"). In voice and lyric, Pryor rarely awes (his one-trick timbre wears thin at this plodding speed), but he is consistent and cinematic enough for repeated, thoughtful listens.

Although the Get Up Kids' Matthew Pryor leads this collective, the New Amsterdams' sound has little to do with the boisterous emo the Kids are revered for. Instead, the N.A.'s set their emotionally-charged lyrics to piano-driven jangle pop. Check out the hooks on "All Our Vice" and "The Spoils of the Spoiled.
