 Longwave The Strangest Things
| |
Longwave deliver big waves of dreamy pop goodness, but aren't afraid to bury their addictive sound underneath even bigger waves of crunchy, hazy guitar effects. It's a lean guitar pop sound, similar to both early U2 and their recent tourmates, the Strokes. Check out "Pool Song" for an example of these bright pop wonders.
The furry-headed foursome Longwave are currently one of New York's hottest live bands, refining a spacy guitar buzz that recalls classic British shoegazing bands such as Slowdive or Swervedriver, as well as elder totems such as Joy Division, Television and (especially) U2. Now, after turning heads in the U.K. on tour with their pals the Strokes, Longwave break out from Read More the pack with The Strangest Things. The twin guitars of Steve Schiltz and Shannon Ferguson are the main attraction here, enveloping Schiltz's warm quaver of a voice in a haze of melodic distortion, with appropriately big production from Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips). The anthemic "Everywhere You Turn" manages to find an original twist on the most-copied rock song of the past year, Joy Division's "Disorder," which is always a song worth copying. But from the majestic "I Know It's Coming Someday" to the plaintive "The Ghosts Around You," Longwave are already modern-rock heavyweight contenders. ROB SHEFFIELD (From RS 916 – February 20, 2003)
