 Katy Rose because i can
| |
Sixteen-year-old Katy Rose snarls like Avril Lavigne but writes barbed, prematurely jaded lyrics reminiscent of Fiona Apple. Her debut album was arranged, produced, engineered, co-written and partially played by her dad, former Poco keyboardist Kim Bullard, in a home studio built in the barn that once housed TV's talking horse, Mr. Ed. (Does it get any more Southern California?) Rose doesn't have much of a voice, and her recitation skills are worse: Her mostly spoken "Watchin' the Rain" sounds like a Saturday Night Live skit come to life. Once or twice, though, Dad creates some lovely art-rock flourishes that flatter this Nico fan's L.A.-damaged poetry, and the vaguely creepy father-daughter Read More contrivance clicks.
