Morning Sci-fi

After helping define the progressive-breakbeat sound, Welsh act Hybrid decided to downsize for their return. Morning Sci Fi is a loose-fitting departure from their 2000 debut Wide Angle, whose sweeping, orchestral tracks won them praise and from the world's biggest DJs. They return minus a production team member and the kooky chanteuse Julee Cruise, hitting the floor instead with Adam Taylor, whose vocals are decidedly more mainstream and make less of a impression. Hook, who adds flavor to first single "True to Form." Later "I'm Still Awake" rumbles in, fronted again by Taylor, on a poppier dance tip. "We Are In Control" hints at a return to the style of their debut, but becomes modernized as it offers acid-breaks en masse. Morning doesn't match the emotional outpouring of its distinctive predecessor, but it's still a clever progression and welcome evolution in the Hybrid sound-system.
