Holly Williams The Ones We Never Knew
| |
The debut by country legend Hank Williams' granddaughter has prompted some wit-challenged folk to ask, "Is talent genetic?" Actually, the question should be "What if the Indigo Girls were less annoying and there was only one of 'em?" Twenty-three-year-old Holly Williams has had some man trouble: Phrases such as "a broken man," "brokenness inside your heart" and, er, "I watch you crawl" rear up everywhere on this debut, amid bittersweet melodies -- until the loveliness of Williams' voice gets a bit curdled by all the venom. The deliciously bummed "Cheap Parades" is good for a wallow or two, and the chords of "Man in the Making" cut like a good hurt should, but something here rings untrue. The Read More greatest songwriters look heartbreak dead in the eye, then admit that they're part of the problem. The Ones is an accomplished debut, but unfortunately it's more spiteful than soulful.
Did you know that the late great Hank Williams had a musical granddaughter? Neither did we! With Hank Williams Jr. and Hank the III in the papers, who knew that Holly Williams was this amazing singer-songwriter with a really gorgeous voice and a debut album that sounds a bit like a Nashville tinged version of Edie Brickell?
