If you enjoy daringly conceptual knuckleheads, the very idea of Deadsy is worth the price of admission. Elijah Blue Allman, the son of boogie rocker Gregg Allman and the seemingly immortal Cher, dyes his hair, renames himself P. Exeter Blue I and creates a band on a mission to rewrite the entire oeuvre of pasty Gary Numan New Wave. Commencement would be simply silly if Mr. Blue hadn't modeled his sound on such goofy-but-great pioneers of synth-booty (Deadsy also cop moves from the Cure and, well, Rush). sound: undercore. "Gramercy Park" is also quite possibly the gnarliest song ever to name-check the Hittites, those iron-smelting mooks who brought wreck to the Babylonians back in 1590 b.c. "She Likes Big Words" features a percolating synth line straight outta Flock of Seagulls and a dozen other hair heroes too notorious to mention. But lyrics such as "She bites the heads off her mutual friends" feature something else: a sense of humor. It's enough to make you think Deadsy are all a hilariously high-concept prank. Which it is, um, right?
