The Cure's second album was the beginning of the stereotypical Robert Smith "teenage funeral parlor" sound. Standouts include "A Forest," "Play for Today" and "In Your House" - which points the way to the even darker, gloomier -- and more focused -- follow-up album, "Faith.

The Cure took a big stylistic leap between their guitar-driven debut and the synthy, sparseness of 17 Seconds. The bonus cuts on this special edition feature B-sides (fun, but mostly nonessential) and vibrant live cuts that illustrate that transition. They've always sounded better in concert than their lack of stage presence and physical energy suggests.
