 Bumblebeez 81 The Printz
| |
Fuzzed-out electronica from cow-taping Australian laptop adventurer those laptop computers are so user-friendly these days that any music freak can hole up in his bedroom for a month and record an album. Or you can wander the hills in rural Australia like Chris Colonna, one-third of Bumblebeez 81, and hold microphones in the faces of cows. Colonna, his sister Queen ViLa and their pal Surya had all sorts of manic ideas as they recorded Printz (first released as two EPs in 2003). The Beez sound like the bastard child of Dizzee Rascal and Meg White: a hodgepodge of grimy hip-hop and garage-band twangy blues distortia. Their first single, "Pony Ride," is country on crack, while "I've Come Read More With Water" hypnotizes with its wildly suggestive lyrics ("I've come with water/To put out your fire"). A stinging good time.
Australia's Bumblebeez throw together chopped beats and ragged guitars, while singer Chris Colonna and his sister alternate between snarling and (vague) rapping. It's a dirty mess that sounds like panic-stricken punks playing hip-hop, with some electro-tinged post-punk thrown in for fun. So, yes, it's totally brilliant.
