Bob Dylan claimed that his 1962 adaptation of "He Was a Friend of Mine" was inspired by a version he heard by this Chicago street singer. Gray (1906-1980), who had a big urban-Leadbelly voice and searing Dobro technique, was certainly a blues and folk-revival celebrity long before he made this lone 1972 album, which re-creates the open-air energy and down-home truths of his legendary Maxwell Street shows.
