Baxter Dury Len Parrot's Memorial Lift
| |
As the late, great punk-era London rocker Ian Dury used to sing, there ain't half been some clever bastards. Two years after the old man's death, his son Baxter Dury proves that he's quite the clever bastard himself. He's found his own niche as a Brit-pop singer-songwriter, and his debut album, Len Parrot's Memorial Lift, is a surprise delight, delivering eight airy, gentle pop songs touched with strings, keyboards and Dury's high, sweet vocals, in the mode of Belle and Sebastian or the Beatles. In wispy tunes such as "Oscar Brown," Dury sighs and emotes with help from members of Portishead, Pulp and his dad's old band the Blockheads. With its generously festooned layers of quiet beauty, Read More Memorial Lift is a reason to be cheerful for sure. ROB SHEFFIELD (From RS 920, April 17, 2003)
