    Time for the scoffers to admit it: Rap metal was good for something. Because of rap rock, metal's lock-step pulse was loosened to allow more beat-wise variety. The whirling, exotic herky-jerk of the Apex Theory would have sounded arty and fancy five years back. Now, even if their so-called Mediterranean groove embraces its global sources no more deeply than Zeppelin's "Kashmir" did, it further expands metal's rhythmic palette. Granted, Los Angeles' second-biggest Armenian-American hard-rock band might still be mailing out its own demos if System of a Down hadn't landed on the charts already. not political, and singer Andy Khachaturian can sometimes suggest Anthony Kiedis' more sullen moments. Topsy-Turvy ain't no beach party -- Khachaturian's cry of "Generation Misled!," on "Bravo," sounds almost like grunge is happening all over again. Rap metal understood rhythm. Guess it's time somebody added the blues.
