Even when he's dressed up as Billy Corgan (or Chris Gaines), it's hard to disguise a folkie. Angie Aparo has a nylon jacket and a shaved head, and his debut, The American, is shellacked with twenty-first-century modern-rock production provided by Matt Serletic (the knob-twiddler for Matchbox Twenty and Collective Soul). But underneath the shimmer and shine, it's all Jackson Browne. Fortunately, Aparo's sensitive, often politically aware songs don't resist Serletic's glossy arrangements: The producer proves adept at enhancing the inner drama... Read More of Aparo's writing, especially on tuneful if modest songs like "Hush," "Cry" and "Spaceship," which Serletic gives some sonic thrills. The problem with the relentlessly midtempo American is that every overlong track seems to get the same treatment with layered vocal overdubs and synth-filled choruses. One of these might make you turn up the volume on your car radio, but the whole batch will put you to sleep. (RS 841)
