Favoring accessible country-blues pop over NRBQ's more avant-garde leanings, Party Favors (Anderson's first solo effort since 1972) is a friendly, unpretentious distillation of the qualities that have endeared Big Al to devotees of the World's Greatest Bar Band. From the tongue-in-cheek swagger of "Crazy Like a Fox" (previously recorded by NRBQ on its 1987 live disc God Bless Us All) to the moving nondenial denial of "Don't Want Your Love," Party Favors offers a pleasing dose of Anderson's Read More soft-centered-tough-guy persona. Balancing sly wit and romantic sincerity, appealing numbers such as the impishly playful "I Got Your Number" and the rollicking janglefest "I Still Love You" wouldn't be out of place in the less wacky moments of the Q's live sets. And it's not hard to imagine a mainstream pop artist adapting "I Could Do This All Night" or "Nothing Else Will Do" as an MOR anthem. If there's any respect in which Party Favors disappoints, it's simply that (despite the presence of NRBQ's ace drummer Tom Ardolino) Anderson's no-frills musical settings lack the unpredictability and rhythmic bite that keep his usual band from becoming overly precious. Still, Anderson's melodies are so catchy and his vocals so ingenuous that such carping seems beside the point.
